Pittsburg State University will unveil a significant gift of
artwork by world-renowned artist Andy Warhol at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, February
25th in the James S. and Treva J. Dawson Lobby in the Bicknell
Family Center for the Arts. The artwork, which will be added to the
university’s permanent collection, is a gift from Robert and Gwendolyn Tyler.
“We designed The Bicknell Center to be a cultural
destination for the region,” said Pittsburg State President Steve Scott. “The
Tylers have a long history of supporting their university and their gift of an
original Warhol is an extraordinary addition to our permanent collection. It
speaks volumes about their belief in our mission and of our university’s
commitment to the arts.”
Andy Warhol is one of the most iconic artists of the 20th
century. His innovative approach to art-making still influences contemporary
art and culture. He challenged traditional boundaries between art and life, and
art and business, in all types of media. In the process, he turned everyday
life into art and art into a way to live the everyday.
“That Andy Warhol’s work will be displayed in the Bicknell
Center, a place where the visual and performing arts will be celebrated
together, is stunning,” said Rhona McBain, chairperson of Pittsburg State’s
Department of Art. “It will serve as an inspiration to all who perform and
visit this wonderful facility. We are grateful for the Tylers’ generosity and love
of the arts.”
Robert D. Tyler, president of Winfield Consumer Products,
Inc., is a 1975 plastics engineering technology graduate of Pittsburg State
University. Tyler previously served as a trustee of the PSU Foundation, Inc. He
is a member of the PSU Plastics Advisory Council and the Tylers are lifetime
members of the PSU Presidents Society.
